Triptych Fine Art Photography

Nature and Landscapes

A triptych is a set of three works of art that are connected, and that can be seen either as three individual works or one image divided into three parts. It is a trilogy of sorts with a related theme, story, symmetry, color palate, or editing style.

The Merriam-Webster Dictionary describes a triptych as ”a picture (such as an altarpiece) or carving in three panels side by side” or “something composed or presented in three parts or sections.”

With a landscape scene such as the one below, you end up with something resembling a panoramic photograph in a large-scale format that is both interesting and different from the typical single piece. While the concept has been around for a very long time, it is not common to find modern fine art photographers using the concept. It is something I’ve recently dabbled in that has been hugely popular among my customers. You may click here to see other triptych images I have to offer.

The power of triptych art lies in its ability to work as a coherent piece, as well as three separate works of art. It is generally more popular than the diptych (formed of two parts) or a quadriptych (formed of four parts) because of its power of the number three. Three pieces work to accommodate a number of motifs, from balance and pattern to story and meaning.

Not just any image will do, however. It requires a conscious thought and purposeful effort to create. The flexibility that triptych photography offers is a delight, offering numerous possibilities in arrangement, framing, and scaling of the images. The image below shows an example of a triptych of three different images within a theme.

Moving and transporting a triptych is much easier than one very large piece and typically costs a little less when compared to single pieces larger than 40.” I will tell you however, hanging your triptych fine art pieces can be tricky. I have realized through hanging my very own and by assisting customers with hanging their triptychs. I am creating a model that will help you out.
